As coordinator for Pupil Premium, I have been looking for a while for an effective intervention programme with proven impact to improve what we do and close the gap between students in receipt of pupil premium and their peers. After an online demonstration, it was clear that SAM learning did exactly what we needed it to and more.
Without our setting we have a HLTA who runs intervention for underachieving pupil premium students however previously a number of different programmes were used meaning data was inconsistent and meant a lot of additional work for the HLTA. Also in order for intervention to be successful, teacher collaboration is key and in a busy high school this can be difficult especially when you are running a number of different interventions and need to create your own reporting format for each teacher.
SAM learning has completely changed all that for us as it pulls together all subjects and levels into one place and provides regular reports meaning the data is already done. There is also excellent communication from the team meaning that the HLTA has additional support and they can work together in a collaborative fashion to identify next steps.
Students have been grouped into intervention groups based on need and work with the HLTA on key topics. This has helped personalisation, massively, as they can all be working on something completely different and tailored to their needs. Students love the programme, especially the element of competition, and the majority of students complete additional tasks at home independently. Reports are then shared with staff that teach them so they can see progress being made and where their strengths and difficulties lie. Again, this allows the teacher to personalise work in class and also feed in to what they need to do next to improve.
During the last term, all students on the programme had improved by at least one sub level for the subject they were working on whereas previously progress for this cohort had been static. It has really improved engagement, personalisation and intervention as a whole across the school and I would definitely recommend.
