Why do I get a blank or grey screen on the Revise exercises?

The problem of blank or grey screens in Revise exercises is because Java is not installed on your computer. To fix the problem, simply install Java by following the instructions at: www.samlearning.com/help/JavaInstall.html.

Why am I unable to click the 'Done' button to complete exercises?

At the end of a revision exercise you must click the done button for your score to be displayed on your screen and your progress to be saved. Occasionally your security settings may be set in such a way that nothing happens when you click on the done button. This is a particular problem for some users of the Norton Internet Security software suite.

If you have Norton Internet Security running please Click Here for a resolution to the problem. If you are not running Norton Internet Security but are still having this problem it is likely that you have some other firewall or pop-up blocking software which is interfering with the functionality of the drag and drop exercises, if you are unable to work out where these settings may be please contact our customer support team.

What browser do I need?
You need Internet Explorer 5.5 or above, or Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or Netscape 5 or above. Note: it is best to avoid using the latest versions of browsers because they can include software errors that might mean that Sam Learning does not work properly. Definitely do not use any version of a browser that is described as a "Beta" version - this means that it has not been fully tested and almost certainly will include software errors.

My screen doesn't seem big enough
SamLearning.com has been designed for a minimum screen resolution of 800 pixels wide x 600 pixels high. It will work on higher screen resolutions (although, the higher you set your screen resolution, the smaller your text will appear). Samlearning.com can be used at 640 pixels wide x 480 pixels high screen resolution but this is not recommended - because on some screens you might find navigation difficult.

Why are Learners inadvertently accessing each other's accounts?

Some networks use a Proxy Server to cache frequently accessed Internet sites to reduce the amount of Internet traffic on the network. This can result in students inadvertently accessing each other's accounts. Students who are having this problem should 'refresh' the page, which will usually give them the correct page.

To avoid the problem completely it's best to disable proxy server caching of www.samlearning.com. The local caching of the web browser should provide enough performance gain by itself without extra caching by the proxy server.

Most proxy servers will have an option to disable caching for a list of domains. For example with the Apache proxy server, you need to locate the line in the configuration file (usually called httpd.conf) that starts NoCache. Alter this line so it reads: "NoCache samlearning.com".

If you are not sure how to disable caching of SAM Learning on your own proxy server please contact your proxy server provider.

How are Levels/Grades calculated?

Within a subject the same grade boundaries (or level boundaries) are used for every Exam Practice exercise irrespective of level of difficulty. This shows Learners their strong and weak topics.

From a teacher?s perspective, the level or grade given for an individual Exam Practice will be too high for a low-level topic and too low for a high-level topic. When looking for an indicator of overall performance you should not focus on an individual result but on aggregate results across a range of Exam Practice exercises and Exam Papers.

Our grade boundaries (or level boundaries) reflect Exam Board grade boundaries or SATs level boundaries. In GCSE Maths a different set of grade boundaries is used for Lower/Intermediate Tier to the grade boundaries used for Higher Tier.
